I already have the Black Box / Rules Tome, what should I get?

The Advanced Fantasy material is available as four supplements to the base game, adding new character options, spells, monsters, and magic items. The Dungeon Mapper pledge level gives you all four Advanced Fantasy supplements.

I already have the Black Box / Rules Tome plus the first two Advanced Fantasy supplements, what should I get?

The first two Advanced Fantasy supplements (Advanced Fantasy: Genre Rules and Advanced Fantasy: Druid and Illusionist Spells) were published in 2019. If you already have these books, you can complete the Advanced Fantasy set with the new Monsters and Treasures books! The Dungeon Delver pledge level gives you the two new Advanced Fantasy supplements.

Do the Advanced Fantasy Tomes include material from the Classic Fantasy Rules Tome / Black Box?

Yes! The Advanced Fantasy Tomes present a complete game, compiling everything from the base game (the Classic Fantasy Rules Tome / Black Box) with the new Advanced Fantasy material.

If you already have the base game and just want to add the new material on top of it, the modular supplements are for you.

Will I be able to add a copy of the Black Box?

The first printing of the Black Box from the Old-School Essentials Kickstarter last year is unfortunately now virtually sold out (down to the last few copies). We were considering doing a second printing of the box as part of this Kickstarter, but on final analysis the costs were just too high to justify. (We’re already looking at printing 9 new books following this Kickstarter!)

We may run a separate Kickstarter in the future, dedicated to a second printing of the Black Box.

Are you going to produce a new Black Box with extra space for the new books?

No. We were considering doing this as part of this Kickstarter, but on final analysis the costs were just too high to justify. (We’re already looking at printing 9 new books following this Kickstarter!)

Will I be able to add on extras in the pledge manager?

Yes! All Necrotic Gnome products that are in print (this includes all the new books from this Kickstarter except the collector’s edition tomes) will be available to select as add-ons in the pledge manager. No need to increase your pledge amount to account for these — you’ll be able to make the extra payment in the pledge manager.

I already have the Black Box. Will all of the Advanced Fantasy books fit inside?

The 4 Advanced Fantasy supplements will fit in the Black Box along with the 5 books of the base game, but the lid will be very slightly raised (about 5mm / 0.2”).

Is this a complete clone of the Advanced edition game?

No, Old-School Essentials: Advanced Fantasy is a clone of the Basic/Expert edition (B/X) with extra classes, spells, monsters, and magic items adapted from the Advanced edition (1e). The Advanced material is adapted to the lower levels of power and rules complexity of B/X.

Is Druid and Illusionist Spells a new printing?

Yes, we’ll be doing a 2nd printing of this book, including a fix to the infamous spine text error. All Kickstarter backers whose pledge includes this book will receive a copy of the 2nd printing.

Why separate Player’s and Referee’s Tomes?

The complete Advanced Fantasy game is simply too much content to fit comfortably in a single book. Each of the tomes will come in at about an inch thick (2.5cm). If all of that content was combined into a single book, it’d just be unwieldy.

Will the collector’s edition tomes be available after the Kickstarter?

Once the collector’s edition tomes have been received by all backers whose pledges include a copy, there may be a small number left over. These remaining copies will be put on general sale. Otherwise, the collector’s editions of the tomes are only available to backers of this Kickstarter.

The reason there may be extra copies is that we need to round the size of the print run up to a reasonable number in order to guard against the eventuality of loss or damage during shipping. We wouldn’t want a backer’s copy of a limited edition book to get lost or damaged in transit and not have a spare copy to send them! (Obviously, we’ll do everything we can to avoid loss or damage during shipment, but we have to make sure we have spare copies to send out to people, in case it’s necessary.)

Are there plans for an Advanced Fantasy referee's screen?

No, there are no plans currently for an Advanced Fantasy screen.

The currently available referee’s screen has everything you need to run Old-School Essentials (either Classic or Advanced). About 85% of the space on the screen is taken up with core rules and tables for adventuring and combat. The remaining 15% is saving throw and class ability tables for the Classic Fantasy classes. As the manufacturer we work with physically can’t print screens any wider than the current one, adding class info for the Advanced Fantasy classes would mean removing half of the core rules and tables from the screen, which isn’t a worthwhile trade-off.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
